NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) provides ophthalmic payment processing services for over 16 NHS Trusts, processing over 2 million GOS forms per annum.

NHS SBS has modernised and transformed Ophthalmic Payments with the launch of Ophthalmic Web Located Service (OWLS) which is free* for existing NHS SBS Ophthalmic clients and is an innovative new approach to processing ophthalmic payment claims.

Currently, optometrists who provide General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) to the NHS have to submit payment requests to their local Trust. This heavily paper-based system is both labour intensive and protracted due to a high percentage of claims requiring rework resulting in potential delays in payment to optometrists, as well as increased administration and costs.

Today NHS SBS, through its OWLS service, provides a modern solution to optometrists and Trusts alike; it is a secure web based system that enables optometrists to submit claim forms electronically, thereby speeding up the payment process. Trust finance teams and optometrists are able to reduce paperwork and rework, the claim can be tracked during its lifecycle and the system provides reports throughout the process. It is an easy system to implement and can be rapidly deployed to support better management information.
